Wireless Internet Security

Wireless internet security is an important part of using wireless technology. Every computer that has internet access faces some degree of risk. Even with security software enabled it is still important to protect your individual computers.

Having more than one layer of security will make it even more difficult for someone to cause you problems like identity theft, wiping out your information, or inappropriate conduct with your children. You can use your computer online more securely with both antivirus/antispyware software and a firewall working in the background.

Antivirus/Antispyware Software

Wireless Internet SecurityViruses and Spyware are the most common problems when using the internet, and they come in many forms. Some are no more than a nuisance, while others are downright dangerous.

A simple explanation...

Viruses are programs that enter and run on your computer without your knowledge or permission. In a nutshell, they can wipe out all your information and ruin your computer.

Spyware is also something installed on your computer without your knowledge or permission, and it is designed to gather information.

If you're serious about wireless internet security and want a more detailed technical read try these articles about computer viruses and spyware.

Good wireless internet security includes the use of virus protection software that includes antivirus and antispyware protection. You would be surprised how many people don't use anything. With antivirus software, if the software detects a virus it will take action to protect your computer.

Viruses are constantly created, so it is important to update your software on a regular basis. Most of the software will do this automatically as long as you set it to do so. Kept current, your software will usually be able to recognize, block, and if necessary remove the viruses and spyware that comes your way.

Which security software should you use? The truth is it doesn't really matter as long as you use it. As long as it works. You want software that is frequently updated to protect you from the latest threats.

One more thing... many people fail to take preventative measures in advance of a problem. Don't wait for something to happen before you think about security. It's called security for a reason.

Firewall Technology

Wireless Internet SecurityAnother layer of wireless internet security you should use is a firewall. There are hackers online who try to access computers without permission, sometimes just for fun, and sometimes to steal information.

If you store any sort of important information like credit card numbers, accounts, or anything you value, a firewall can provide an extra layer of protection for that information. The odds of a hacker wasting their time on your personal network are slim, but it can happen.

To protect against unauthorized access to your computer you can use two types of firewall technology. One type is the hardware firewall in a router that protects an entire network. Then you have software firewalls used on individual computers to protect the computers themselves.

If you have both a firewall router and firewall software installed on your computers the different firewalls will work at the same time and they won't interfere with each other. Most newer computers have firewall technology. If you use Windows (XP, Vista, etc) you have firewall software but you can always use other firewall software if you like.

According to Microsoft, "Windows Firewall does offer some protection from network attacks from malicious software known as worms. However, Windows Firewall does not protect you from viruses or spyware." That is why it is important to also use virus protection software as part of your wireless internet security plan.

A software firewall is very useful for wireless internet users (both DSL and Cable) because the connection is "always on" which means you are always connected to the internet. A firewall has the ability to block unwanted access, depending on the level of security you set up. You can even make it so that only certain emails get through.

With multiple layers of security it will be more difficult for anyone to gain unauthorized access to your computer, at home or on the road. That means security. That means your information remains yours.

Where Do You Begin?

Step 1: Install antivirus/antispyware software on your computer. If you have more than one computer on a home network have it installed on every computer. I set mine for automatic updates to make sure I have the most up to date protection.

Step 2: Use a firewall. Get a router with a firewall - AND - use firewall software on your individual computers, either the one that came installed or get another one.

If all this is too much for you (information overload) it will probably be worthwhile to pay a professional to make sure your network and computer(s) are secure. Better safe than sorry.
