A wifi signal finder gives you easy access to a largely free global network of wireless internet. These handheld units can help you locate a wireless internet signal, inside or outside.
Their compact designs let you take them anywhere you go, and their low price makes them easy for everyone to afford. Here's a closer look at wifi signal finders and why you should have one, especially if you travel or use public wifi.
The difference between a great wifi signal and a sketchy wifi signal may be as close as the next concourse in the airport, or across the room, or even the next table over. You can just pick a random spot and hope for the best wireless signal, or you can use one of these handy devices to find the best signal and get the best connection.
Top Rated WiFi Signal Finders
With a wifi signal finder you simply turn it on and let it do the heavy lifting. You will see in the palm of your hand how good of a signal you have. If you like it, then go ahead and turn on your computer. If you want a better signal try a different location. It's that simple to use and that useful to have.
There is nothing worse than not finding a signal when you're ready to sit down and knock out some work, some homework, or even just get online and socialize. Not finding an outlet so you can plug in ranks up there too.
How To Pick a WiFi Signal Finder
Here is what I would look for, pretty basic stuff...
Size
It has to be convenient to carry. Most are small enough to fit on a key chain or in your pocket and store nicely in your laptop bag
Signal Finding Ability
Some units detect signals up to 165 feet away (50 meters) outdoors, and 98 feet (30 meters) indoors. 98 feet indoors seems plenty far to pick up a signal. Of course, I won't turn down a longer range.
Cost
I think the more I use it the more I would be willing to pay for it. I'm an occasional user but usually in the same locations so I like to find the good spots and stick to those areas.
Reviews
Though I take all reviews with a grain of salt they can be useful to narrow down my selection. If all other things are equal, a highly reviewed product has to be given serious consideration.
In a pinch I've used my wifi-ready smart phone (Palm Pre) to locate a signal. I turn on wifi and see what the signal is like in different locations. Once I find a good spot I turn off wifi and turn on the laptop.
Some smart phones (like the Palm Pre) even act as a 3G wifi hotspot themselves, capable of providing wireless connections to other 5 devices.
