Satelite Internet

Broadband for Everyone

Satelite internet used to be thought of as an option only for those who lived in rural areas. You lived way out there and it was too expensive to run cables (over $100,000 a mile to run fiber optics) so you got your internet signal from the sky. Television too.

These days you don't have to live in the country to enjoy high speed satellite internet. It's available virtually anywhere in the US.

You'll need the standard equipment consisting of a dish to pick up the signal and a modem. The internet provider will have these for you either on a monthly basis or to purchase.

You'll also need an optional wireless internet router if you want to go wireless. If you want the freedom to use the internet where and when you choose, you'll want to go wireless.

The provider may also have routers. If they don't or if you just want to get your own, you'll find satelite internet is compatible with nearly all major wireless home networking products.

Check the wireless internet router page for more information.

In order to point the dish correctly most satelite internet providers require professional installation of the equipment. They will usually mount the mini dish on a roof, outside wall, or even in the ground. The install usually takes 2 to 3 hours. Pointing a mini dish at an unseen satellite in the sky and verifying your service connection usually takes a professional installer, but there are do-it-yourself options.

Satelite internet isn't as "reliable" as cable internet, it is subject to weather conditions among other things. However, you can expect to enjoy high speed satelite internet, faster than dial-up, and do anything you'd normally do with other types high speed internet service. Most plans also include basics like anti-virus / anti-spyware software and plenty of email address.
